Ginger & The Schnappes | New Jazz and Social Music in the Lehigh Valley

In this Episode, we’re talking with Joe MIxon and Ginger Brew of Ginger and The Schnappes, a six piece jazz band from the Lehigh Valley.

Ginger and the Schnappes is a star studded affair with Mixon on Guitar, Ginger on Vocals, Brian Bortz on Bass, Dan Twaddell on alto sax, flute, and soprano sax; Vernon Mobley on drums; and Patrick Kerssen on piano.

“Ginger and The Schnappes is a six piece jazz band that swings the great jazz standards. Their broad repertoire covers the great songs from 1920 to 2020 and includes Jazz, Pop, Latin, Country and Blues. Their music is inviting, listenable and danceable.”

We talk about how they formed, promoting during the pandemic, their upcoming shows at Musikfest, their new album social music, and how you can book them for your next gig.

Dinky’s was started when Norman, or Dinky (we’ll get in to that) hurt his back and wasn’t going to continue being a trucker. Jill gave him a book to write his ideas and the rest is history.

We talk about the struggles they’ve faced not only during covid, but also opening two locations in the Lehigh Valley, their original in Bangor and now on E 3rd Street in south Bethlehem.

Adrian Shanker | “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health”

On this week’s episode, I talk to Adrian Shanker, Founder and Executive Director of the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. We talk about the upcoming book he edited and contributed to, “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health” which tackles the pervasive health issues queer people experience throughout their lives through artfully articulated, data-informed essays by twenty-six activists.

“Bodies and Barriers” has been named by NBC News as one of “10 LGBTQ books to watch out for in 2020” and includes a foreword by Rachel L. Levine, M.D., currently the Pennsylvania Secretary of Health, and an afterword by Kate Kendell who, for 24 years, led National Center for Lesbian Rights as their Executive Director.

On this episode we talk to Ronnie, Paul, and Susie from Soul Perspective, LLC. Susie and Paul have been friends since they were kids and they picked up Ronnie along the way to form a trinity of entrepreneurship.

Their first project is a children’s book entitled “Simeon Bleeker’s Magical Sneakers.” In this series, the main character, Simeon, gets to experience life through the perspective of someone that’s different from him, to essentially “live a day in her shoes,” to gain a better understanding of how they see and live life.
