We recently came across a few old Zook’s Dutch Novelties Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs, complete with a flyer from New Holland, PA.
So naturally, we did a little digging.
The flyer lists Zook’s Dutch Novelties at Division Hwy., New Holland, PA and includes a full lineup of traditional hex sign designs tied to love, luck, welcome, protection, blessings, and Pennsylvania Dutch folk art.
The visible design list includes:
H-1 – Irish – Good Luck of the Irish
H-2 – Love and Romance
H-4 – Unicorns – Peace and Contentment
H-5 – Double Distelfink – Double Good Luck
H-6 – Distelfink – Good Luck Bird of the Penna. Dutch
H-8 – Horse Barn Sign – Protect Livestock
H-13 – Welcome – Good Luck & Happiness
H-14 – Oak – Strength, Health & Long Life
H-16 – Fertility – Abundance & Good-Will
H-21 – House Blessing
H-22 – Daddy of all Hexes – Good Luck all year
H-23 – Welcome – Good Luck & Welcome Home
H-28 – Love, Marriage, Happiness
H-29 – Double Welcome
H-30 – Hospitality and Welcome
The one shown here appears to be H-2: Love and Romance, which felt like a pretty good one to have around the house!! 😛
While looking for more background, we found an old Retro Roadmap post about Jacob Zook’s Original Hex Signs / Jacob Zook’s Family Crafts in Paradise, PA. The article says that shop had been in business since 1942, was known for original hand silk-screened hex signs, and that its Route 30 location had closed by July 2010.

It’s always a little sad when places like that disappear. These were the kinds of roadside stops that carried real regional character: folk art, souvenirs, local history, and designs you could immediately recognize as Pennsylvania.
So we decided to put ours up around the house.
A little love, a little luck, and a small piece of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art history.
