Judy Sabino of Coopersburg brought more than dessert to Bethlehem’s Luckenbach Mill on May 30. She brought a four-generation family story, baked into an Italian Crostata that earned her first place in the inaugural Baked into Bethlehem Baking Challenge.
The recipe came from Sabino’s Nonna, then her Aunt Sandra, who still makes it at age 92. Before the contest, Sabino traveled to Scranton to bake the crostata with her aunt, turning the competition into a family memory.
“It is an afternoon I won’t forget,” Sabino said, adding that she was happy to share the tradition with her 1-year-old granddaughter.

Filled with apple butter from Pappy’s Orchard & Bakery in Coopersburg, the crostata stood out among 10 regional bakers. Ryan Lichty of Bethlehem placed second, while Michele Bernardich of Whitehall and Hannah Hoch of Nazareth tied for third.
The challenge was presented by Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites as part of its Baked into Bethlehem exhibition, open through July 26 at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts and the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem.

“The Baked into Bethlehem Baking Challenge was a delightful event,” Sabino said. “Everyone’s desserts were showstoppers.”
