The Pottsville Maroons were one of the most dominant teams in early professional football, yet their story remains one of the greatest injustices in NFL history.

On this episode of the Lehigh Valley with Love Podcast, we talk with author and sports journalist David Fleming about the Maroons historic 1925 season, how a small Pennsylvania coal town helped legitimize professional football, and why the NFL championship they earned was ultimately taken away.

The conversation covers how Pottsville beat powerhouse teams and even took down a Notre Dame all star squad, a win that helped legitimize the fledgling NFL. But after an exhibition game was played in another team’s territory, the NFL suspended Pottsville and the championship was awarded elsewhere, setting off a fight that has lasted a century.

We also talk about the team’s Pennsylvania ties, including Lafayette connections, the rise of civic pride around pro football, and why the push to restore the 1925 championship is still alive 100 years later.
