“The sermon was about the circumcision of Baby Jesus.” That’s how Lisa VanArsdale describes a recent trip to a mega-church in Phoenix, and it is exactly the kind of unexpected, funny, and slightly unsettling real-world moment that fuels her live show, Lisa Joins a Cult, coming back to Bethlehem this month.
VanArsdale brings Lisa Joins a Cult to the Visitor Center at SteelStacks on Thursday, January 30, 2026, at 8:00 PM.
Tickets and details are at https://www.lisajoinsacult.com/.
She also recommends arriving early: “Come early to peruse all the pamphlets and other goodies that groups have given me through the years, which will be on display throughout the room. And stay for the Q&A after the show!”
If you saw the SteelStacks version a couple years ago, she says you’ll recognize the core of it, but there’s plenty that’s refreshed: “The show is very similar to two years ago… but the script has been re-worked to be funnier, and there’s A LOT more photos,” plus a quick update on a few groups since more recent visits and “a lot more goodies” in the artifact display.
The show blends storytelling, video, and Lisa’s personal collection of literature and artifacts from groups she’s visited over the years, exploring religious “culty” communities with humor and a real effort to keep the focus on the people inside them, not just the spectacle.
We’ve talked with Lisa before, and that previous interview is a good primer if you want the backstory before the new SteelStacks date.
Lisa Joins a Cult is also a podcast, and season two is out now.
