David Bennett Cohen Trio Brings 60 Years of Blues and Rock to Godfrey Daniels on November 28

On Friday, November 28, 2025, the David Bennett Cohen Trio rolls into Godfrey Daniels, Bethlehem’s legendary 90–seat listening room, for an 8 p.m. show that connects 1960s psychedelia to today’s blues scene.

Cohen is best known as the original keyboardist for Country Joe & The Fish, one of the bands that helped define the San Francisco sound of the late sixties. His swirling organ parts and gritty piano anchored albums like Electric Music for the Mind and Body and I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die, records that blended rock, blues, and counterculture politics.

But that’s only one of his musical lives. Before the Fillmore era, he was a Brooklyn kid steeped in classical piano who fell hard for boogie-woogie and blues after hearing players like Otis Spann and Professor Longhair. After Country Joe & The Fish, he became a go-to sideman and solo act, working with artists as varied as Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Mick Taylor, and Booker T. 

Cohen has spent decades passing on the language of blues and rock piano through books, videos, and workshops, including the long-running “Teaches Blues Piano” and “Teaches Rock and Roll Piano” series. For many players, he is the bridge between classic records and their own first confident chorus.

Hearing this trio in an intimate room like Godfrey Daniels is a different experience from a festival or club.

The venue is designed for listening: low ceiling, close tables, strong sound, and a history of hosting serious songwriters and instrumentalists. It’s the kind of place where you can hear the details in Cohen’s left-hand groove, the stories behind the songs, and the interplay with his band in real time.
