Moravian Historical Society Opens “Moravians & The Revolution: Caught in the Crossfire” on Feb. 22

Posted On February 3, 2026 By lvwithlove In Community News /

The Moravian Historical Society will open a new special exhibition, Moravians & The Revolution: Caught in the Crossfire, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, with an opening-day talk and reception at its museum in Nazareth.

The program begins at 1:00 p.m. with a lecture by Dr. Scott Paul Gordon, professor and Andrew W. Mellon Chair at Lehigh University. A public reception for the exhibition follows from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The exhibition examines how Moravians in Pennsylvania faced the pressures of the American Revolution while trying to uphold a tradition of pacifism. As competing interests intensified in the region, the Moravian community navigated demands from American patriots, the British government, and Indigenous groups, all while attempting to avoid being drawn into political conflict. The stories presented highlight how the war challenged Moravian efforts to maintain a degree of separation from the outside world and ultimately reshaped community life.

Curator Andy McLeod developed the exhibition using firsthand accounts from the Nazareth, Emmaus, and Bethlehem Diaries, which document the strain of living through a conflict that reached into daily routines and religious ideals.

The exhibition also includes original artwork by Bob McLeod, co-creator and illustrator of The New Mutants, with credits across major Marvel and DC characters, along with published children’s book work.

Seating for the 1:00 p.m. talk is limited, and advance reservations are required. Tickets are $12, with $6 tickets for Moravian Historical Society members and free admission for students with ID. The reception is free and open to the public. Tickets can be purchased through the Moravian Historical Society’s Music and Lectures page.

Moravians & The Revolution: Caught in the Crossfire will be on view from February 22, 2026, through January 17, 2027. The talk and exhibition are supported in part through the Hotel Tax Grant Program via the County of Northampton Department of Community and Economic Development.

The Moravian Historical Society Museum is located at 214 E. Center Street in Nazareth and is open daily from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
