Hellertown Historical Society Hosts Special Screening of The Fries Rebellion

Posted On October 20, 2025 By lvwithlove In Community News /

History buffs and film enthusiasts alike are invited to a special screening of The Fries Rebellion, an acclaimed short film exploring the 1798–1799 Pennsylvania tax revolt that took place across Northampton, Bucks, and Montgomery counties. The event will be held on Tuesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. in the Hellertown Historical Society’s Tavern venue, located in the lower level of the historic Heller-Wagner Grist Mill at 170 West Walnut Street, Hellertown, PA. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Actor Jason Searock of Macungie, who portrays rebellion leader John Fries, will be in attendance to introduce the film and share insight into the story’s local significance. Complimentary light refreshments will be served, and free off-street parking is available near the venue.

Seating is limited to 50 guests, and tickets are required but free. They can be picked up at the Society’s office (150 West Walnut Street, Hellertown) during business hours—Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon—or reserved by phone at 610-838-1770. Fewer than half of the tickets remain, and additional screenings may be scheduled based on interest.

Directed by Dan Hertzog and written by Sarajane Williams, The Fries Rebellion follows teenager Kayla (Nancy Kimball) as she reluctantly tackles a school history project after moving back to Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. Guided by her uncle (Jon Reinhold), a history professor, Kayla experiences haunting visions that transport her to the late 18th century, where she witnesses the real-life events of the Fries Rebellion unfold.

The short film has earned praise for its stunning cinematography, authentic period detail, and compelling blend of history and the supernatural. Supported by Northampton County, Lehigh County, and Lower Macungie Township, the project connects past and present while shedding light on one of America’s earliest acts of popular resistance.
