Asking People on the Street in 1999 if They Own a Cell Phone

The year was 1999 and a Dutch filmmaker took to the streets to ask if people had mobile phones.

The answers were a resounding, “No” and “Why would I need one” and “I have an answering machine at home. I’ll call when I get back.”

Compare that to the year 2016 where some people have near anxiety attacks if they are without their phone for even a small period of time.

An interesting question to ask is whether or not people are more open to being available at all times now or if they are just expected to because of the prevalence of smart phones and other devices.

There is almost a feeling of naivety when watching these videos. There are a few points where you want to tell these people (who probably had the same reactions as we would have) to strap in for what’s to come.

The fact remains that, no matter the opinion on the matter, it’s a simple fact that businesses and organizations looking to connect with people who are always connected also always need to be connected themselves.

And, hey, 1999 may seem like a long time ago, but you definitely remember having one of these…

…and you probably still have this problem.
