Boys & Girls Club of Allentown Wins NASA’s VIRTEX Video Competition

Posted On October 1, 2025 By lvwithlove In Community News /

The Boys & Girls Club of Allentown (BGCA) has been named the national winner of NASA’s August 2025 VIRTEX Video Competition for its project “Space Cadets at the Boys & Girls Club of Allentown.”

The award highlights BGCA’s participation in NASA’s VIRTEX program, Virtual Field Trips to Extreme Environments, which connects students with NASA scientists through hands-on STEM learning. Allentown’s Space Cadets spent the summer exploring space science, conducting experiments, and learning about STEM careers.

With mentorship from planetary geologist Dr. Kirby Runyon, the team explored planetary surfaces, extreme environments, and the future of space exploration. Their creativity and enthusiasm set them apart on the national stage.

“Through our Space Cadets program, young people didn’t just learn about science they discovered confidence, teamwork, and new career dreams,” said Katarah Jordan, CEO of BGCA. “Winning this national competition is proof that when you give kids the chance to reach for the stars, they will.”

As part of their prize, BGCA’s Space Cadets will travel to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for a two-day symposium this fall. The achievement underscores the impact of STEM programming and partnerships that inspire young people to pursue big goals.

BGCA continues to serve hundreds of Allentown youth each day, offering programs in literacy, athletics, STEM, the arts, and leadership development.
