Facebook’s “See First” Feature and Why Your Page Shouldn’t Bother With it Too Much

Posted On September 2, 2015 By lvwithlove In Blog /  1

Whenever Facebook launches a new newsfeed feature, brands with Facebook pages generally clump into two camps:

  1. They complain that it’s going to limit how many of their followers see their updates or
  2. They start smothering their users with how to implement said feature so that their pages’ posts reach more of their followers.

Case in point, remember when Facebook let page owners know that their users could get notifications if they opted into it?

Remember seeing this all day long on Facebook for a few months back in 2011 or so?

Remember how annoying that was? Remember how many times you actually did it?

The answers to the previous questions should be “Very” and “exactly zero”.

Okay, so what are we getting at here? Well, Facebook recently rolled out their “See First” feature which allows users to control who they see first in their newsfeed. It’s a pretty simple concept and one that I have used to prioritize who I see in my newsfeed. I enjoy it. It’s easy to do. I get updates from my friends and pages I want to.

On mobile, just hit the “More” dotted line button on the Facebook main page and then hit “News Feed Preferences”.

On desktop, hit the down arrow button at the top right and then select “News Feed Preferences”.

Then you get to do all sorts of fun things.

see first who

Having someone put your page in their “See First” list would obviously be a coup for your brand, right? But, let’s be honest with each other, are they going to do it unless they really like your page? Probably not.

If you want to go on your page and instruct your followers, through crude graphics, how to put your page in their “See First” list, you might just find your page on the “See Never” list.

The best bet for brands with Facebook Pages is to continue to push quality content that engages and interests their fanbase, which will result in a higher rate of their Fan Page posts appearing in their fans’ news feeds via the Facebook algorithm.

The moral of the story here is that forcing your fanbase to do something usually backfires, but knowing how to set up your own “See First” list can be fun!

Love your brand!
