The Colony Meadery Wins Four First Place Prizes at Mead Free or Die International Competition

Lehigh Valley meadery took first place in four out of five categories entered

May 2, 2016: Londonderry, New Hampshire – The Colony Meadery, the Lehigh Valley’s award-winning producer of fermented honey, won first place in four categories at the 2016 Mead Free or Die competition held April 30.

The Colony Meadery entered in five different categories, taking home first place in the following:

  • 1st place Semi-Sweet Traditional Mead: Straight, No Chaser
  • 1st place Melomel: Wu Tang Cran’
  • 1st place Spice, Herb or Vegetable: Beso Exotico
  • 1st place Experimental: Mo-Mead-o

Mead Free or Die is now an international mead only competition for both amateurs and professional mead makers. Both competitions are registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program and are judged using the 2015 BJCP style guidelines. The competition featured 169 amateur competition entries and 71 in the professional competition.

“The competition at Mead Free or Die is some of the best anywhere,” said Mike Manning, Cofounder and Mead Maker of The Colony Meadery. “We’re honored to have done so well and congratulate all of the competition’s winners.”

The first place finishes bring The Colony Meadery’s total medal count since 2014 to 23.

“We entered in five categories,” said Greg Heller-LaBelle, Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of The Colony Meadery, “So, to take first place in 80 percent of the categories that we entered is a great achievement we’re very proud of.”

The wins at Mead Free or Die come just one week after The Colony Meadery announced the availability of online ordering via their website.
